I would have no problem with using the mature tag, as long as it was properly defined. In some cases it seems to be used to tag light swearing, where as in others it is for more...mature stuff.

More to make people aware of what they might be reading when they click on the thread, but yes I do also think we have just a little responsibility to at least try and warn possible kids on this forum that this is not something their parents would like them to read. If they then read it anyway and get traumatized...well they were warned. :P

To make it easy one could always attempt to use the movie rating system. It seems to be somewhat defined and it is familiar to people. In which case I would suggest that mature was R and above XD

IMHO I have no problems with the mature tag it does what its meant to do and that is point out that it might contain language or subject matter that might not / should not be available for children.

But

1 or 2 postings under this subject have been more than a little "adult" orientated. I'm all for putting more mature content into creative writings or art work BUT, not if it should border on pornographic literature for example. I feel some guide lines (rough and broad set) should be set in place so all know where such boundaries lie.

Another solution I have just thought of is we have a "Mature section" (some times known as a DMZ {De Militarisation Zone} where it is set aside with the understanding that it's content is clearly marked as mature and of a some what adult content.

There are other matters involving this the site staff and myself need to talk over. But rest assured we are dealing with this and working hard to find a solution to please everyone. Stay Tuned !

Simple then! Ditch the [Mature] tag, instead use [Cursing] or [Sexings] and voila, no-one will be confused about the contents.

When it comes to ERP and such though, am I completely mistaken if I think that it is mostly people under 18 who do this in the first place? At least the ERP I've been priviledged to witness in my time has put the 'im' in 'mature'. Anyway, I would assume the underaged are in fact more keen to go for anything tagged [Mature], [X-rated], [ERP] than the so called mature folk. So I am sure if there would be a Mature section, it'd hardly keep the so called children away. Quite the opposite.

I think it'd be best if all just acknowledged this forum has the same age restriction the game itself has, and write their stuff accordingly. But without deeming people between the ages of 14 and 18 to be completely oblivious when it comes to erotica. There is nothing wrong with romance, there is nothing wrong with your character writing about intimacy they may share with their companion, or a random passer-by, but one can always keep it tasteful, and not go into great detail. If someone feels it is their sole reason for writing, to go into great detail about their character's sexlife, then there is this place called Darknest which is perhaps more suitable for such talent. I mean, if I were to write an explicit diary, I would hardly start writing about gentle drops of life all over my rosey petals of lust. I've not really read most of the diaries here, but I would assume we are not in the man juice and succulent love hole phase yet even, so there is no huge problem with the occasional bare skin described, as long as it stays somewhat classy still. And with the tagging there is a forewarning, so I see no need for a separate section.

...You made me snicker, Slashy. Succulent love hole!

Personally, I think making a Mature section is just going to alienate those people that have tagged [Mature] and have stuck within more than reasonable bounds. So I am all for a better definition of mature on WoWgamer but would rather we didn't enter the realms of ridiculous with the number of sub-boards.

Do feel the need to address something, though. There seems to be a lot of folks implying that the sexual encounters described in diaries (in varying degrees of smut) have all occured in-game. Think about this for a moment, do we honestly think that every encounter (sexual or otherwise) has actually been RP'd out?

Does Shiryou sit somewhere in Eversong RP'ing with herself as Rachel, Alex and Shir? Similarly, do I sit in the Sunfury Spire RP'ing with myself when Ally is at "a meeting in the Spire"? The answer is no.

Now, back to the smutty diary entries. I can't speak for everyone but personally speaking, one of the following happens: things reach the point of "lip contact with intent to copulate" I either send or receive a "Fade to black complete with suggestive noises?" and we either log or skip off to do other things, someone goes to log and sends a "Can I assume they go at it like rabbits sometime this evening?" or writes a diary entry and pokes the other person involved to make sure they're okay with it having happened etc. So yes, please don't assume that everyone that alludes to their character's sex life at one time or another in diary form is an ERP'er.

Edit: Also, without wanting to be confrontational - I went on a diary hunting mission (because I could only think of two examples of times I'd felt folks had gone over-board) and couldn't find anything else that I felt went too far or even anything that was overly smutty at all (apart from maybe my rogue's diary which I'd be happy to remove if folks find it offensive - though I don't think that's explicit, just suggestive) so has this been exaggerated somewhat or am I just completely blind? Obviously if it's putting folks off from posting it's an issue regardless of the scale of it am just intrigued because it was made to seem as though the diary forum had become rife with romping (and I was clearly distressed at having been oblivious ;) ).

Hmm, I dont know if I think people have been overreacting about this. So far it seems to me that people have been fairly calm and discussed this without getting grr.

I am not going to all prudish and say that people who write it are deviant, because honestly I know Thea would be much worse than she is - if I let her. So I think it is really just about setting some rules on a topic where there previously has not been any. :) Nothing to get overly worked up over but something that needs to be addressed.

And just to make sure, I dont think anyone should feel bad about this discussion - in the sense that I dont think anyone is to blame for causing trouble - regardless of what they might have posted in the discussed section. This is just a thing that needs to be brought up, looked at and then made some guidelines for.

I didn't say anyone was over-reacting. As Zarr said, the discussion has all been handled very well so far. I asked if it had been exaggerated somewhat. It was said that we were being swamped with overly mature diary entries and that it was far more than one or two but so far I haven't found very many at all that I felt had "toed the mature line".

Again, as I said, it still needs to be addressed if there are folks that feel it's an issue and I would agree that I've found at least two diary entries that really went overboard and it's something that needs to be defined.

Ally, you are as usual right about a lot of things! No one has gone overboard, its been a really quiet discussion about the limits we place on wowgamer, because one post made some people want to know exactly what we want here.

And we DO need to be aware (unless Jezz has his own servers?) that some servers can and do lock down on content that doesn't fit in with their rules, that is worth checking on unless we want an outside power to choose for us.

I think Slashy's post was well written, suggested clear and simple guildlines of taste and decorum, and no one suggested that every bit of inferred sex has been rp-ed in game! If that were the case, I must have had a fun time with my nonexistent orc lover!

ed in light of new post!

Or you could just leave out the "mature" material in your writing. Frankly, it doesn't affect me as I never visit the diary section, but surely you don't have to write the border-line or over-the-line stuff. Couldn't you just use more 'safe' words, that give off the same impressions without the details?

Ila, you have made that choice. Other people choose differently. Either is fine, as long as we all understand the rules of the forum and abide by them. We just need to clarify what those rules are, that is all. Your DK story was pretty mature, just not sexual in content, should we have censored you?
